2023 Summer Program Elementary and Middle School Frequently Asked Questions for Families

What are dates and programs offered?
- The elementary and middle school programs will be in session June 12th-July 14th
- High School June 6th- July 7th
- Extended School Year June 7th- June 29th
- No classes June 19th and July 4th for all programs

Where will summer school programs be located?
Prunedale Elementary will host Prunedale and Castroville students in current grades TK-5. Elkhorn Elementary will host Elkhorn and Echo Valley students in current grades TK-5. NMC Middle School will host middle school students in current grades 6-8.
Before and After School programs will be offered at Prunedale, Elkhorn, and Middle School. Transportation will be provided for the regular summer school program ONLY. Transportation will NOT be provided for the Before and After School programs.

When are applications due?
Priority enrollment is Friday, April 14th. Applications received by that date are guaranteed enrollment. Applications will be received through Friday, May 12th.

What if I turn in my child’s application late?
Late applications will be accepted through May 12th. After that date, families will need to wait until the first day of the summer program to submit an application.

What if I want my child to attend a different site than they’re assigned to? For example, my child attends Castroville so they’re assigned to Prundedale for the summer. But I want them to attend Elkhorn.
Please indicate the request on your child’s application. Staff will try to accommodate your request but it will depend on enrollment numbers at each site. In these situations, families will be responsible for their own transportation.

What if my student is a current 6th grader?
If you would like your current 6th grade child to attend the summer program, they will need to complete the middle school program application that was sent home. Current 6th graders will attend program at the Middle School.

What if my student is a current 8th grader?
If you would like your current 8th grade child to attend the summer program, they will need to complete the middle school application that was sent home. Current 8th graders will attend program at the Middle School.

How will I know my child has been accepted into the Summer Program?
Enrollment lists will be posted at each school site the week of May 22nd.

Will transportation be provided?
Transportation and regional routes will be available based on student needs. Further information will be provided at a later date with more specific information on routes once students' needs have been identified. Transportation will be provided for the regular summer program only. Transportation will not be provided for the Before and After School programs.

Do I have to pay for my child to participate?
There is no charge for the summer program.

Do I have to pay for my child's meals?
There is no charge for meals during summer program.

What meals will be provided?
Students will be provided breakfast, lunch, snack, and supper depending on their enrollment.

Will there be before and after school programs during the summer?
Yes, there will be before school care starting at 6:00 am and after school care until 6 pm. Families who want to participate will need to mark the appropriate section on the summer application form. Transportation will not be provided for before and after school care.

Can I miss a week for a family vacation?
We encourage students to attend all program days. However, if students are not able to attend the entire program, please indicate this on the summer program application.

Can my child attend Summer Program and the Migrant Education Program?
Yes. The Migrant program offerings are occurring outside of the academic summer program hours. Your child should be able to attend both programs if they qualify.

Is Summer School offered to incoming Kinders?
Enrollment is currently limited to students who are already enrolled in the district.

What is the summer core program about? What will it be covering?
The academic portion of the day will be designed to review Language Arts and math concepts while also preparing for next school year. The enrichment portion of the day will include socio-emotional learning, music, art, and other enrichment activities.

What is Extended School Year (ESY)?
Extended School Year (ESY) is for students with special needs receiving their primary instruction in a Special Day Class setting. IEP (Individualized Education Program) teams determine whether ESY is necessary each year.

Can my child attend the Extended School Year (ESY) and Summer Program?
If families of students with special needs are considering enrolling in Summer Program, it is important for them to reach out to the Special Services Department (831) 633-6168 to further discuss the program.

Can I turn in my application at the FRC?
Yes, the FRC can receive applications through May 12th. After that date, parents will need to wait until summer program begins to enroll.
